Sandroing: Tracing Kastom in Vanuatu

The exhibition “Sandroing: Tracing Kastom in Vanuatu” celebrates Vanuatu’s unique sand drawing tradition — an ancient storytelling art that preserves folklore, histories, and kastom knowledge through intricate designs drawn in sand. Recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, sand drawing reflects the creativity and cultural depth of Vanuatu’s northern islands.

This exhibition, held at the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) in collaboration with the Vanuatu Kaljoral Senta (VKS), marks MOIFA’s first Oceania-focused showcase since 1960. It was developed through joint research on Vanuatu’s cultural collections and discussions on potential object repatriation.

Featured artist Edgar Hinge, from Pentecost Island, will create sand drawings live, sharing his cultural knowledge as both a practitioner and museum educator.

The project is supported by the US Embassy in Vanuatu, the International Folk Art Foundation, and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation.

Don’t cancel your trip to Vanuatu – we will return stronger

With 70% of the tourism sector currently operational, the Department of Tourism (DoT) has assured a positive message for international aviation and cruise visitors that Vanuatu is still open for business.

Director of the DoT, Paul Pio, said although the Port Vila main wharf is badly damaged with no available access, the two cruise hubs in Mystery Island and Santo are operational and receiving tourists.

“At this stage, the cruise ships scheduled in January, which are en route to Port Vila, have been directed to Mystery Island and Santo, so this has provided some relief to the business community. Although it’s not in Efate, at least our two cruise hubs have covered it,” he said.
